Shulato Books

Ten ni Kirameku
Date: 1989
Publisher: Animage (Amjuju)
Serial number: ISBN4-19-669623-6
Pages: 93

A very small book containing art from the first season. There are some nice full-page illustrations that I haven't seen anywhere else. There are bios of the villains, accompanied by characature-style drawing of them, and Lakshu and Reiga adding comments :). There's also a film-story-style synopsis of episode 25.
But what I really want to know is, who does the third pair of arms belong to?

All pics. Big, beautiful pics. Mostly from the early in the show. Except for the cover, it's all screen shots, so there's nothing new, but they're big and there's a lot of them.

Film Story 1
Date: 1990
Publisher: Keibunsha
Serial number: ISBN4-7669-1151-2
Pages: 109

This covers the first season of the TV series. Lots of picture, mostly screens from the show, with some line drawings. There are short bios of the Hachibushu, Juuga Sanninshu, Vishnu and Indrah. It has the lyrics for Shining Soul and Sabaku no Meizu. The end section has short synopses of the season 1 episodes and some B/W production art.

Love Song
Date: 1990
Publisher: Bandai
Serial number: ISBN4-89189-091-6
Pages: 104

This is a nice book. It has some really nice cel artwork of the "couples" (not necessarily romantic ones) that appeared in the show. Then there's a film-story synopsis of the whole series, although the second season only gets one page. Then there's production art, including color pics of some of the early Shakti design. There's some B/W doujinshi art and interviews with some of the voice actors. The niftiest part is a quiz to determine which of the Hachibushu would make the best boyfriend :).

Perfecton
Date: 1990
Publisher: Keibunsha
Serial number: ISBN4-7669-1265-9
Pages: 112

The standard combination of film-story, bios, production art (some in color!), doujinshi and episode synopses. The episode synopses cover the entire TV series. Plenty of screen shots. There's also some full-page cel artwork and illustrations by Okuda Matsuri that I haven't seen anywhere else. There are a couple of pages of shot-by-shot diagrams of the transform and spell sequences. It also has cassette labels and cards attached in the back.

Shulato Encyclopedia
Date: 1990
Publisher: Rapport Deluxe
Serial number: None
Pages: 120

The usual combination of character bios, film-story, production art and doujinshi. This book has a fold-out poster in the front, and postcards, cassette labels and various other goodies in the back. The back side of the poster is a game board, and the pieces are included with the cards. The encyclopedia name comes from the large dictionary-type article where most of the main names/items/etc in the show are explained.

Tenkuukai Paradise!

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the doujinshi section or the book section. Since it isn't entirely doujinshi, I put it here. It has a few pages of screen shots from the show, and the rest is doujin art. Some really nice color ones, some B/W. There are a few short manga stories and a staff interview. There's also some stickers and a fold-out double-sided poster.

Visual Mook
Date: 1990
Publisher: Fusion Project
Serial number: ISBN4-89393-076-1
Pages: 121

The first half is in color. It has the obligatory character bios and artwork, this time accompanied by some really nice watercolor art. There's even nice art of the villains! The second half is B/W. It has design artwork of the characters, Shaktis, locations and such. It even has some of the early first-draft designs. There are storyboard sketches, a couple of doujinshi manga stories, and staff interviews.

The name means "Great Billows of Hot Wind", which may or may not be a fart joke. The book is almost entirely text, except for some humorous illustrations. It contains three stories by Akahori Satoru. One of them is "Tenkuu Senki Lakshu", which appeared on one of the drama CDs.
This is where the little panels at the bottom of the pages came from.

Film-story synopses for the first three volumes of the OAV, doujinshi and production art, plus some storyboards.

Shulato Mini Mook
Date: 1992
Publisher: ACPS
Serial number: ISBN4-89601-013-2
Pages: 66

A few pages of screen-shots from the OAV (nice and big), a few pages of B/W production art. Some nice color doujinshi art, and some short manga stories. Oddly, Scrimil and Mina aren't featured in the book at all, even in the production art section.

Not specifically a Shulato book, but I thought it belongs here, anyway. This is an artbook of illustrations by Okuda Matsuri (Shulato's character designer, if you haven't read the story page). Most of the art is from Shulato, but there's also some from Legend of Galactic Heroes and Yohma. There's also an interview with Ms. Okuda.

Best Selection 10: Bishonen Anime Video
Date: 1990
Publisher: Keibunsha
Serial number: None?
Pages: 108

Another book not specifically about Shulato, but that has some related content. This fangirl-targetted book catalogs some of the male characters in some 1990 OAVs. It has screenshots and bios of Shulato, Gai, Reiga, Hyuga and Ryouma (poor Kuuya and Dan always get the shaft) and a B/W section of background info on the anime. The screenshots are all from the TV series. This was published before the OAVs were released, so the videos it refers to are the "Tenkuukai Memorial" videos.
If you're interested, the other OAVs it covers are Samurai Troopers, Carol, Earthian, B-Boy. Ryokunohara Labyrinth, Legend of Galactic Heroes, Megazone 23 III, Utsunomiko and Cyber City OEDO.
